Quill Track News

If you're a fan of YA, general book geekery or an aspiring writer (original or fanfiction!), Ascendio has the programming track for you! The Quill Track will be an entire track of programming (both formal and informal!) dedicated to all things books and writing.

Best of all, the Quill Track is 100% included in your Ascendio registration!

Currently, several authors, all bonafide Harry Potter fans, are confirmed for the Quill Track, including Lev Grossman, Beth Revis, Veronica Roth and Aimee Carter.

We will also have not one, but THREE literary agents who will be in attendance: Carlie Webber of the Jane Rotrosen Agency, Lindsay Ribar of the Sanford J. Greenburger Associates agency, and Joanna Volpe, Vice President of the Nancy Coffey Literary Agency. Carlie, Lindsay and Joanna will all be hosting pitch sessions, as well as leading discussions on the publishing industry and writing.

Here are some of the great things you can look forward to as part of the Ascendio Quill Track:

  • "Book club" readings/signings/discussions with YA authors, such as Beth Revis, Veronica Roth & Aimee Carter

  • Panel discussions on hot topics in publishing, including commercial publishing vs. self-publishing, LGBTQ in YA, how to get an agent, and more

  • Practical presentations by successful fans-turned-published authors on how to go from fanfic to pro writing, as well as how-tos on self-publishing ebooks

  • Workshops on writing (fanfic and original) and critiquing

  • The opportunity to give a one page pitch & receive feedback from a real live literary agent!

Of course, Ascendio is still all about Harry Potter, but we realize that many fans -- including many of us on staff! -- love books in general, and have been inspired by Harry Potter and fandom to move on to our own original writing. Hence, the Quill Track was born, by Harry Potter fans, for Harry Potter fans... who also love books and writing! You can expect most, if not all, topics on the Quill Track to relate to Harry Potter, though some will also discuss other titles in YA, middle grade and adult contemporary canon. All of the authors, agents and presenters on the Quill Track are Harry Potter fans, and many of them either wrote Harry Potter fanfic or have actively participated in HP geekery in the past.

The Quill Track is still a part of Formal Programming at Ascendio -- we just decided to give all writing/publishing programming a special name so it’s easy to find on the program and at the con! What does this mean? The Quill Track needs you! You can submit a programming proposal for the Quill Track about any of the above topics, or anything you come up with -- if it has to do with writing (original or fanfiction!), publishing or books other than Harry Potter (such as The Hunger Games, Divergent), you can propose it for the Quill Track!

Check out the bios and additional information on our website!
Don't forget, the Ascendio Full Registration price goes up to $225 after Cyber Monday is through. Our Full Registration includes THREE full days of programming, TWO feasts and ONE fantastic Ball (and admission to at least 15 meetups, over 55 formal and informal programming sessions, a dozen wrock performances, seven or eight fan films, three workshops and lots more amazing fan-created, fan-inspired and fan-focused content). Oh, and the return of Norberta The Massive Dragon!

We've also had a bunch of meet-up sign-ups; check out the list of already-coordinating groups here. You can sign up here and claim your group's space.

And don't forget, the programming deadline is in February! Check out the Call for Proposals, and think about a round-table you might want to lead, a panel you want to organize, or a talk you'd like to give. As usual, our programming sessions run the gamut from structured, organized, formal and academic sessions to fandomy and spirited discussions.

We have some fantastic announcements coming up, and can't wait to share them with you!

Ascendio Informal Programming Survey

Informal Programming chair Mallory Vance wants to know what you’re interested in enjoying, watching, listening to and participating in at Ascendio. Click here, take the survey, and let us know!

If you're on Tumblr, please reblog it there and share the URL around on LJ, FB, Twitter, etc. We'd love as many perspectives as possible!

The lovely people at Loews have set things up so y'all can make hotel reservations for Ascendio via the website! (Note: It may not work on all mobile devices, but you can always enter the GQC7A1 code to get the rate via the mobile site, fwiw.)

The hotel rooms are $210+tax per night for quad occupancy in standard rooms, and $265+tax per night for quad occupancy in deluxe rooms, which are a little larger and may have better views - also, the rates are available from the night of July 9 to the night of July 17, so you can come early, or stay late.

If you want a suite, though, you still need to call the hotel - they can't automate those reservations so they work online, because they're 30% off but the prices change in some complex mathematical fashion. To get info about suites, or make a regular reservation by phone, call the hotel at 866-360-7395, or you can fax 407-503-9258. You must provide them with our code – HPEF-ASCENDIO.

Also, don't forget that registration for Ascendio is now open at our website - we're coming close on 200 standard registrations so if you want the early bird rate, don't wait!

See you next July!
Ascendio would love to meet you this summer, as we gear up for an amazing evemt at Universal Orlando from July 12-15, 2012.

if you're coming to LeakyCon or live in or near Orlando, and want to learn more about Ascendio, register, meet some of the con team or be thanked for registering, join us at Jake's American Bar on the groud floor of the Royal Pacific on Friday, July 15 from 3:30-5 for margaritas and nibbles. If you can't make it then, we'll be sticking around a little later than that, and hanging out in the Orchid Court late Saturday afternoon, too.

You don't have to be registered for LeakyCon - or already registered for Ascendio - to stop by and say hi to us - and in September, we'll be at Dragon*Con, too, with some fan table and bar-side festivities! More info about location/dates coming next month.

See you there!
